Our Abbe School of Photonics has developed numerous international academic partnerships and benefits from a dense network of contacts to leaders and decision-makers in photonics all over the world. As a student at the Abbe School of Photonics, you will have several opportunities to plan a semester abroad while staying perfectly in line with your study plan and without losing time. Immersing oneself in the everyday-life of a foreign country and a foreign-language university greatly widens one's horizon and can present completely new career opportunities. You will experience that, with the education you receive in Jena, you are well prepared to be successful at any other university of the world.
EU-wide Erasmus+ program
The European ERASMUS+ program External linkenables our best students to study or to perform an internship abroad and receive a living-cost-supporting ERASMUS+ scholarship. As a student of the University of Jena, you will have the opportunity to expand your professional, social and cultural skills at approximately 250 partner universities in at least 27 countries.
Prerequisites and deadlines for Erasmus+ scholarships
Participating in the ERASMUS+ program requires the student to apply for an ERASMUS+ scholarship well in advance. Participation is open to all students enrolled at our Faculty (BSc and MSc; Physics, Photonics, Material Sciences...). Thus, the application procedure as announced by the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy must be followed in detail.
If you are a student in the M.Sc. Photonics course in Jena, it is one important prerequisite that you show a very good study performance in the during your 1st (and 2nd) semester. Please also note this important deadline: you need to submit your application until January 15 to get a study slot abroad at the same year, although there is sometimes some flexibility in individual cases.
For more information on the opportunities of the Erasmus+ program, please contact Prof. Malte Kaluza as the responsible Erasmus coordinator for Physics and Photonics.
Studying physics, photonics or quantum optics at the TU Delft, The Netherlands
Based on a special Erasmus+ program, ASP currently offers a bilateral exchange agreement with the Technical University (TU) in Delft for the local M.Sc. Applied Physics course. This exchange program is open to Jena's Master's degree students of Physics or Photonics.

The training program in Delft is conducted entirely in English. The exchange is designed for up to two semesters. Delft is particularly notable for its outstanding academic teaching in quantum optics. Further, you will have the opportunity to write your Master's thesis in one of the Delft working groups. Internships or Master's theses are also possible to be conducted in one of the regional Dutch high-tech companies and in agreement with the Delft course supervisors. There are no additional tuition fees.
To get more information about the Delft exchange program, please contact Dr. Christian Helgert. For more detailed advice concerning study opportunities and your course choices at the Physics department of the TU Delft please contact InternationalOffice-TNW@tudelft.nl on the Dutch side.
Studying photonics at the University of Bordeaux, France
Based on a special Erasmus+ program, ASP currently offers a bilateral exchange agreement with the French University of Bordeaux for the local M.Sc. Light Sciences and Technologies program, most of which is taught in English. This exchange program is open to Jena's Master's degree students of Physics or Photonics from the 2nd semester onwards.

Exchange places in Bordeaux are designed for one semester and the training program is available in either English or French. As an academic location, Bordeaux offers outstanding teaching skills, particularly in laser physics and spectroscopy, as well as numerous other specializations. It is possible to do laboratory placements, as well as a Master's thesis in whole or in part during a study stay in Bordeaux. There are no additional tuition fees.
To participate in the Bordeaux exchange program, it is essential to contact Prof. Christian Spielmann, who will advise you on the choice of suitable study modules and the resulting options.
Studying photonics at the Politecnico di Milano, Italy
ASP is currently running an Erasmus+-based exchange with the Department of Physics at the Politecnico di MilanoExternal link. This program offers an exchange of up to one year and is open to Jena's Master's degree students of Physics or Photonics. The exchange is particularly aimed at the international, English-taught M.Sc. Photonics and NanoOptics programExternal link with a strong overlap with topics taught in Jena, e.g., in the local M.Sc. Photonics course program:
