Professor Kyunghwan Oh was born in 1963 in Seoul. Having graduated with a M.Sc. in Solid State Physics at the National University of Seoul he joined the Brown University (USA), where he pursued a M.Sc. in Engineering and continued with a PhD project on spectroscopic studies of rare earth doped fibers and their applications, which he finished in 1994. Kyunghwan Oh did research at several highly renowned institutions and universities, e.g. from 2000 to 2002 at Bell Labs' Optical Fiber Research Department, 2001 at the Optoelectronics Research Center of the University of Southampton and in 2004 as a JSPS Invitation Fellow at the University of Tokyo. Being awarded the prestigous Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship he came to Jena to continue his research at the Institute of Photonic Technologies and the Fraunhofer Institute. Since 2006 Kyonghwan Oh is Associate Professor at Yonsei University, South Korea.

Ever since the days of his PhD thesis, professor Oh's scientific interests have been devoted to optics and photonics. Currently, one of his main fields of research is the investigation of photon-matter interactions at the sub-wavelength scale, in particular, light confinement at metal-dielectric interfaces, being important for near field optics, and the optical trapping and levitation of nano/meso-sized particles using novel waveguides. Professor Oh's research areas include the development of new photonic materials and the design and fabrication of optical fiber devices, as well as micro display devices using optical waveguides.

Kyunghwan Oh has participated in numberous international conferences and published a large number of articles in peer-reviewed international journals. During his stay, Professor Oh will give several lectures on optical fibers and their application.
