Light has been used to control the quality of optical surfaces for more than 200 years. Since it was discovered that light has the properties of an electromagnetic wave, “interference” in particular has been available to researchers and technology developers as a highly precise measurement criterion.

The lecture reports on experiments that led to the theory of relativity and the first detection of a gravitational wave predicted by Einstein. Furthermore, high-precision digital interferometry will be presented, which has been developed at Carl Zeiss since the 1980s to produce components for astronomical mirrors and intensively since the 1990s to produce optics for semiconductor technology. The status achieved at Carl Zeiss SMT paves the way for the realization of current and future digital technology in the world.

Dr. Bernd Dörband (www.linkedin.com/in/bernd-d%C3%B6rband-63934260External link)  learned the profession of optician, studied physics at the TU Berlin and received his doctorate at the University of Stuttgart on the subject of “Analysis of optical systems using automatic strip evaluation and beam calculation”. From 1986 to 2011 he was a research assistant, department head and principal scientist in optical measurement technology, from 1995 specifically for the lithographic optical systems division. In his retirement since 2012, he has been working as a consultant and developer for Zeiss SMT. He has been a lecturer in the areas of ophthalmic optics and optics and mechatronics at Aalen University since 1992.
